Stop-Bump!!!

The other day while I was driving home from the gym, there was quite a bit of traffic. I got to the gym early and so left earlier than I usually do. There was six o'clock jam. The cars around me stopped suddenly (we were going about 45 miles an hour) and when I did, a car from behind thumped me. I didn't really feel so much of a bump, as a tap. I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw some smoke, so I pulled over.

I looked at my bumper, there was nothing, not even a scratch. Yay Land Rover!! The car who "tapped" me, the front end was pushed in and the car was leaking all kinds of fluids. When the driver got out, I asked if she was okay. Thankfully she was. I would hate for anyone to be hurt. She apologized for bumping into me, said that she couldn't break in time, that she had just gotten off a twelve hour shift. Very nice lady.

I wonder why people get so worked up about accidents. Thankfully there was no damage to my car, but there was quite a bit of damage to her car. When the highway patrol came, he assessed and surmised that she hit the part of my car that has the trailer attachment thing (which I realized was really strong, cause all it had on it was the white paint from her bumper). I'm really glad that there was no damage to my car since I make the trek back to West Virginia in about two weeks.

Anyway, back to why people get so worked up about accidents. My only concern about accidents are whether or not people get hurt. I always see them and people shouting and pointing and middle fingers and screaming. There is a reason that it's called an accident--it wasn't really meant to happen, circumstances just got in the way.

Okay, I know I've been absent. I've been trying to get through these last few days of studying. I'm going to pull my hair out--what's left of it. I got it shaved short so I wouldn't pull on it anymore.

  • I'm that girl, that hit you. Well, I'm not literally her. But a couple years ago I hit an SUV and my hood got smushed in. The SUV had practically no damage. She didn't get worked up; although I did a bit. Not middle finger, swearing, flipping out. Just a little rattled. Anyway...
What's up with the "wow" on my recent post? You no like? :)

  • hey angel,

accidents suck because of the BS you have to deal with, the INSURANCE company. Organized crime as I refer to it. I think it's also a tipping point for people as our lives our soo hectic these days.

-- You don't pull it out though... do you have Trichotillomania?

  • well, your attitude is a very refreshing change, from the yellers and screamers with their fingers waiving, because certainly if it could happen to her, it could happen to you, people who get all jacked up don't seem to be able to comprehend they too could cause an accident

  • Glad you're alright! I was trying to find an email address you for you and couldn't, I was pulling my hair out haha.

I have been in 1 accident but I wasn't the driver. and I was a little kid so I don't really remember it. I will say two kids from our local HS were just killed in an auto accident. They were going 80 and flipped their car 8 times while not wearing a seatbelt

  • Well I'm glad you guys weren't hurt. You're lucky you didn't have any damage to your car, that sucks when that happens.

    Good luck with the studying!

  • Reason #1 why I drive around with my trailer hitch in the receiver.

I didn't even own my truck two weeks and some bimbo rear ended me at a red light. News flash, lady. The light had been red and I had been sitting there nearly 30 seconds. WTF were you (not) thinking?!

  • Yes, yeah that your car is a-ok and of course, more importantly that you and the other driver are alright. In general there is no sense and getting all wound up about most things since it accomplishes nothing except increased blood pressure and stress. With that being said, it stinks when your car insurance practically doubles as a result of one accident.

  • If you ask me Angel, I think she used her car as an excuse to try and meet you, but it sounds like you gave her a very nice brush off. ;P

It sucks when people let their emotions control them, especially over fender benders. They should be looking on the bright side. If they can get out of the car to survey the damage, it beats being a part of the damage and not being able to move at all.

  • It's because it usually involves money, and marks against your driving record that stay with you for 3 yrs and an increase with your insurance and possible canellation of your insurance. That is the reason so many people are so worked up when an accident comes along. Even if it is a small one.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't get too upset with people who rear-end me. Stop laughing, you know what I mean. Couple months ago I lost a rear light, got a bumper smushed and the trunk shifted. I got out and asked if the people in the other car were okay. And all the other driver could say was "Oh shit, I'm so screwed!" I was more concerned about him. Then of course, I kicked his ass. Kidding.

  • WB Angel! I am back too. Feel good now that all "foreign medications" are out of my system.

Yes its true. People need to lighten up. I know of no one who means to cause an accident!

  • I am glad neither of you were hurt in the accident.
Also glad you had no vehicle damage...that is inconvenient (if that is the worst that happens).
You are right, the main thing is the concern of people being hurt.
    Have a great weekend!

  • I think they get worked up because of all the headaches that are associated with the accident like dealing with your insurance, getting a rental, and wrecking your car.

By Blogger Mr. Shife, at 3:43 PM

  • Especially since in most cases, insurance pays for the damages. Most ideal cases, anyways.

    Yay for high ground clearances!

  • Glad you were both OK, and hurrah for laidback accidents!

  • Once a truck rear-ended the car behind me and so the car was pushed into me. Just a dent. No worries. Me and the person behind me remained civil and calm.

But the driver of the truck (who caused the accident in the first place) went ballistic, screaming and swearing at the both of us.We just stared at him like he was crazy.

It seemed strange that he was the one most upset, but I'd like to think it might have just been stress and adrenaline.

An apology would have been better received than the abuse.

  • Might be worth sending this post to Land Rover as a testimonial.
