Like Father, Like Son

I guess the saying "if you can't beat them, join them" really does hold some water.

I was driving through town when I pulled up beside a convertible Mercedes. In the car were two very well dressed guys, one in his mid fifties, the other either graduating high school or else a freshman in college. Both were smoking cigarettes.

I was like WTF? My father would cut my lips off before watching me smoke a cigarette. I didn't even have my first beer with my father until I was done with college. I guess my conservative upbringing is the reason I was shocked to see this father-son duo smoking.

Does anyone else find this a bit unnerving?

  • Maybe they were not father and son?

  • From what I see out and about, it seems smoking is making a comeback. What's up with that?

  • I have seen that and yes, I do find it disturbing so you are not alone in your opinion. I still feel slighly uncomfortable having drinks with a friend's parents.

  • I did have drinks with my pa while in college. Having two fiery people drunk is quite a sight. My mom was just baffled. Never again! As you know, my family is one big paradox. Alas, I don't puff anymore and can't stand the smell of smoke. Yeah I don't get it either, but I've seen this situation many times.

  • It's probably because a father that smokes really has little authority to tell his kid to stop smoking.

Although it was a convertible Mercedes, white trash still comes in all different economic statuses (stati?)

  • I think they were lovers.

I drank with my dad as soon as it was legal.

We still have not gone to a strip club together.

  • I do! I don't care what their relationship was that's just wrong. Not to mention I absolutely hate smoke! Bothers the hell out of my eyes.

  • I do!! I saw the same thing only it was a mother/daughter and the daughter looked like she could've been 14!

"My father would cut my lips off" totally made me laugh!! Mine would too!

  • At least they weren't smoking a crack pipe. But then again they would have been walking not driving. Most likely.

  • Advice I received from my chain-smoking father when I was very little: "If I ever catch you smoking, I'll break both your effing legs."

    Words I live by today.

  • I do find it surprising whenever I see an adult and their 'child' smoking.
I used to smoke (thank goodness I quit) and it wasn't until I was 27 years old that I worked up the 'courage' to smoke in front of my dad (who also used to smoke). And it felt SO bizarre.
It felt like any minute he would reach over and cut off my lips (LOVE that quote! made me laugh. And I'm not kidding. My dad probably DID want to cut off my lips! Or take a needle and thread to them at least.)

  • Could have been worse...could have been sharing a spliff. ;)

  • Maybe they just had a father-son outing at a whorehouse, and you have to have a smoke after something like that. At least they do in the movies.

  • I know you're making this up. Nobody in your state can afford a Mercedes! :D

  • I try not to do anything bad in front of my mom, she gives me disapproving looks, esp if I have a drink in front of her. Hello, I'm almost 30.

  • i'm surprised you're suprised about this, being from west virginia, where something along the lines of 30% of the adult population smokes. nothing like that surprises me any more. disappoints, yes. surprises, no.

  • Ha... Aaron, welcome to the South Hills. I think we are the only ones who DON'T drive a convertible Mercedes. Really, I mean REALLY where are people getting money for these cars... I feel like white trash in my Saturn VUE (I just keep saying "its paid off, its paid off").
